Welcome to Anhui Nabor Mechanical and Electrical Equipment Co., Ltd.
Rexroth hydraulic valve sizing is not simply a matter of matching maximum pressure and maximum flow from a catalogue. For a useful technical review, buyers usually need to show what the valve is expected to do, how much oil passes through it, the pressure conditions around the valve, and how it connects to the hydraulic and electrical system.
That information gives an engineer or supplier a better basis for narrowing the valve series and configuration. It is especially useful when the requirement is for a new application, a modified machine or an installed valve whose operating conditions need to be checked.

In industrial hydraulics, “size” can refer to several different things.
It may mean the nominal valve size, the mounting pattern, the required flow capacity or simply whether a valve can pass the required flow without creating an unsuitable pressure loss. With proportional and servo valves, the control characteristic and rated-flow condition also become important.
For this reason, a statement such as “the system runs at 250 bar and needs 80 l/min” is useful, but rarely complete enough by itself.
| Sizing input | What to provide |
|---|---|
| Circuit function | Directional control, pressure control, flow control or proportional control |
| Normal flow | Flow expected during typical machine operation |
| Maximum flow | Highest expected flow through the valve |
| System pressure | Normal and maximum operating pressure |
| Valve pressure differential | Pressure difference across the relevant valve flow path, if known |
| Hydraulic fluid | Fluid type and relevant viscosity information |
| Temperature | Fluid and ambient operating range |
| Duty | Continuous, intermittent or high-frequency cycling |
| Mounting | Subplate, sandwich, cartridge or other interface |
| Control | Solenoid, proportional signal, hydraulic pilot or manual control |
| Electrical data | Voltage, connector and command signal where applicable |
| Environment | Indoor, outdoor, corrosive or other unusual conditions |
If some values are estimates rather than measured data, mark them as such. That is more useful than allowing an assumed value to look like a confirmed specification.
One of the easiest sizing mistakes is to compare valves only by their published flow numbers.
For many hydraulic control valves, flow performance is related to the pressure differential across the valve. A nominal or rated flow therefore needs to be read together with the condition under which the manufacturer specifies it.
Bosch Rexroth's official product selectors illustrate this clearly. For example, the company's 4WRGE fast-response valve selector lists nominal volumetric flow at a stated valve pressure differential. Other valve families can use different rating conditions, so two catalogue flow figures should not automatically be treated as directly equivalent.
This is why a sizing inquiry should distinguish between required system flow and the catalogue flow rating of a candidate valve.
Maximum flow is important because the valve has to accommodate the highest expected demand. Normal operating flow is also useful, particularly for proportional applications where controllability matters over the actual operating range.
Selecting a much larger valve simply because it has a higher maximum-flow figure may not always improve machine performance. The required control range and the manufacturer's characteristic data still need to be reviewed.
For a broader overview of valve types and application factors, see Nabor's Bosch Rexroth hydraulic valves buying guide.
Maximum hydraulic system pressure answers one question: what pressure level may be present in the circuit?
Pressure drop across the valve answers another.
For a directional or proportional valve, the useful sizing condition depends on the pressure difference between the relevant inlet and outlet paths while the required flow is passing through the valve. That value should not be guessed from the system's maximum pressure rating.
Where exact pressure-drop data is unavailable, provide the circuit schematic, pump information and known pressure readings. The technical reviewer can then identify which information still needs confirmation.
Nominal size should normally follow the circuit requirement rather than lead it.
A directional valve needs the correct spool or switching function. A pressure valve needs the appropriate pressure-control function. A proportional valve adds control signal, response and electronic requirements.
The physical size only becomes meaningful once those requirements are understood.
For example, Nabor lists the Rexroth R901545046 4WRDE27V1-500L-6X/MXYWG/24A1 with separate values for nominal flow, maximum flow, nominal size, operating pressure, mounting arrangement and electrical interface. Those fields illustrate why a single “flow capacity” number does not describe the complete valve configuration.
A conventional solenoid directional valve can have a very different specification set. The Rexroth R901008688 4WE6D6X/EG220N9K4/V, for example, is identified by details including its size, spool symbol, connection diagram, supply voltage, hydraulic fluid compatibility and flow rating.
These examples are useful references for the type of data involved; they are not substitutes for checking the actual application.

A hydraulic valve that appears suitable from pressure and flow data may still be unsuitable for the machine interface.
For an installed manifold or subplate, record the mounting standard and port arrangement rather than relying only on external dimensions. Useful details include the connection diagram, nominal size, port configuration and any pilot or drain connections.
The control side needs the same attention.
For solenoid-operated valves, confirm the voltage and connector. For proportional valves, identify whether the system uses an external amplifier or on-board electronics and record the command signal.
Bosch Rexroth's 4WRA proportional directional valve selector, for example, separates nominal size, nominal flow, supply voltage, electrical connection, electronic interface and seal material into different configuration fields.
From a purchasing point of view, those details can also change the quoted configuration. It is better to clarify them before price and lead-time comparisons than after an order has been prepared.
For an RFQ or technical review, the following format is usually more useful than a message containing only a model guess.
| Item | Buyer input |
|---|---|
| Machine / application | |
| Required valve function | |
| Hydraulic schematic available? | Yes / No |
| Normal flow | |
| Maximum flow | |
| Normal operating pressure | |
| Maximum operating pressure | |
| Estimated valve Δp, if known | |
| Hydraulic fluid | |
| Fluid temperature | |
| Ambient temperature | |
| Mounting / connection standard | |
| Port or manifold details | |
| Control method | |
| Supply voltage | |
| Command signal | |
| Connector | |
| Duty cycle / switching frequency | |
| Existing Rexroth part number | |
| Quantity | |
| Destination country | |
| Confirmed vs estimated data |
For an existing installation, add clear nameplate photographs and the relevant section of the hydraulic schematic. For a new design, it is more useful to describe the actual operating envelope than to nominate a part number too early.
| Situation | Better approach |
|---|---|
| Only maximum pressure is supplied | Add normal pressure, flow and circuit function |
| Only maximum flow is supplied | Add normal flow and the expected valve flow path |
| Catalogue flow figures are compared directly | Check the pressure differential and rating condition |
| Physical dimensions are used to identify the valve | Confirm mounting pattern, ports and function |
| A proportional valve is specified without control data | Add supply voltage, signal and electronics arrangement |
| Fluid is described only as “hydraulic oil” | Provide the known fluid grade or specification |
| Estimated values are presented as exact | Mark estimates clearly for engineering review |
This approach also keeps this sizing task separate from a replacement decision. If the objective is specifically to replace an installed valve, the Rexroth hydraulic valve replacement guide covers compatibility checks in more detail.
For pressure-relief, pressure-reducing or other pressure-specific applications, see the Rexroth pressure control valve applications and RFQ checklist.
Once the basic sizing information is available, buyers can use the Bosch Rexroth Valve product category to review relevant product references.
For a quotation, send the operating data together with any known material number, schematic, nameplate photographs and interface information. If a supplier proposes a particular configuration, ask which inputs were confirmed and whether any assumptions were used during selection.
That gives purchasing and engineering teams a clearer record of how the proposed valve was identified.
Start with the required hydraulic function, normal and maximum flow, operating pressure, relevant pressure differential, fluid, mounting arrangement and control method. The appropriate Rexroth series and nominal size can then be reviewed against the manufacturer's technical data.
Maximum expected flow is an important input, but it should not be the only one. Normal operating flow, pressure differential and the required control range may also influence valve selection.
Usually not. Maximum pressure helps determine whether the valve's pressure capability is suitable, but flow capacity, pressure drop, valve function, mounting and control requirements also need to be considered.
Flow through a valve is related to the pressure differential across its flow path. Manufacturer-rated or nominal flow values therefore need to be interpreted together with the conditions under which they are specified.
For a like-for-like purchase, a complete material number is a strong starting point. If the machine has been modified, the original valve is unavailable or a different configuration is being considered, checking the current operating conditions is advisable.
Good Rexroth hydraulic valve sizing starts with the circuit, not with a catalogue search.
Record the function, normal and maximum flow, pressure conditions, fluid, mounting and control interface first. Then compare candidate valves using the manufacturer's technical data and the actual operating conditions.
When requesting a review from Nabor, include the known Rexroth part number, application data and schematic where available. Clearly separating confirmed values from estimates makes it easier to identify what still needs to be checked before a quotation is finalized.
